Wildfire Compact Activated — Check Burn Bans Before You Light Anything

The Arkansas Department of Agriculture says the state activated the South Central Interstate Forest Fire Protection Compact as prolonged drought elevates wildfire activity. Since Aug. 1 the Department has responded to more than 500 wildfires across 11,000+ acres; year-to-date totals exceed 1,450 fires and 37,000 acres. Mutual-aid task forces from five Southern states are deploying engines, dozers, and crews.

For Southeast Arkansas: treat every outdoor burn as restricted until you confirm your county status. Check local burn bans, delay brush piles, and report smoke that threatens homes. Do not rely on neighbor rumor — use official AgDept / county notices.

Official: Arkansas Department of Agriculture — Governor Sanders activates interstate compact (Sept. 22, 2026).
