On January 21, UAM College of Technology–McGehee (UAM-CTM) launched the UAM-CTM Digital Literacy Program with Digitunity and AT&T under the 3 Southern States Connected Communities Program.
Participants complete workshops on basic computer use, online safety and internet skills. Students in Business Office Technology and Health Information Technology online programs, plus GED/WAGE and IET completers, can receive refurbished laptops. Digitunity and AT&T have committed 250 laptops for UAM-CTM distribution; eleven students received devices at the launch.
Vice Chancellor Steven Jossell and Chancellor Dr. Peggy Doss framed the effort as closing Desha County’s computer-ownership gap — Census data cited at the event put household computer ownership at about 54% — so rural students can pursue education, jobs and essential services.
