The Monticello City Council met Tuesday, June 23, under Mayor Jason Akers and advanced several civic-infrastructure and community-service items at City Hall.
Nita McDaniel, director of the Monticello Economic Development Commission, asked for help repairing the Historic Post Office beside City Hall, where MEDC offices have fought roof leaks since 2017. Council amended the 1998 One Cent Sales Tax Fund to support restoration and awarded the carpeting job to local vendor Paint & Lighting Plus after damaged carpet was removed.
Council also accepted a bid from WJ Excavating of Monticello for Sports Complex sidewalks and a walking track linking the west and east sides, approved an Area Agency on Aging of Southeast Arkansas contract for the Senior Citizens Center, and partnered with A.L. Franks Engineering on water-line expansion into a newly annexed area west of town. During public comment, Adena Handly reported that Second Baptist Church’s food pantry — open since April — has served more than 1,000 people and distributed more than 24,000 pounds of food, with pop-up produce distributions and free blood-sugar screenings alongside Baptist Health Medical Center–Drew County.
