Eleven people were shot Saturday night near Florida A&M University’s Bragg Memorial Stadium in Tallahassee, Fla., police said. The gunfire came about an hour after the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff beat FAMU in the Rattlers’ homecoming game.

Six of those shot were children, and the youngest was 11, the New York Post reported, citing the Tallahassee Police Department. A 12th person, a grandmother, was hurt while running from the gunfire. No one was killed.

What police said

The shooting happened just before 8 p.m. Eastern time on Perry Street near the stadium. Tallahassee Police Chief Lawrence Revell said a fight broke out first.

“An altercation occurred between individuals,” Revell said, according to the Post. “We do not know exactly what happened … what we do believe is that this was an isolated incident between 2 or 3 individuals.”

  • Injuries: One victim was in critical condition and three were in serious condition, the Post reported.
  • Arrests: Revell said no one had been arrested as of early Sunday.
  • Campus: FAMU said the campus remained safe. Police asked people to stay away from the area while officers worked the scene.

The Arkansas connection

UAPB won the Southwestern Athletic Conference game 31-28 before a crowd of 20,549, according to the UAPB Athletics game recap. The game ended at 6:51 p.m. Eastern. It was FAMU’s first homecoming loss since 2017.

No report so far has tied the shooting to either team. Police have not said whether any of the victims were from Arkansas.

Closer to home, Lake Village police are investigating gunfire at Lakeside High School during Friday’s Lakeside–Rison football game. No one was hurt in that case.
