An Air Force airman died after he fell while rappelling from the ceiling of the Alamodome in San Antonio before Saturday night’s football game between UTSA and Navy, the Air Force confirmed Sunday.

Nellis Air Force Base Public Affairs said the airman was assigned to Detachment 2 of the 6th Combat Training Squadron. He was hurt at the stadium and died at a local hospital, The Daily Wire and Townhall reported. The Air Force has not released his name. The cause of the fall is under investigation.

What happened before kickoff

Four members of the detachment were set to descend by rope from the stadium’s roof, about 170 feet up, roughly 15 minutes before kickoff. The demonstration was part of UTSA’s annual Salute to Armed Forces and Veterans game, The Daily Wire reported.

  • The fall: Video posted online shows one airman appearing to lose control about halfway down and dropping to the turf, according to The Daily Wire and Townhall.
  • Treatment: Medical staff worked on him on the field for about 10 minutes. The San Antonio Fire Department then took him to a hospital with life-threatening injuries, The Daily Wire reported.
  • The game: Kickoff was pushed back about 10 minutes, and the crowd held a moment of silence. UTSA beat Navy 38-34 before about 23,000 fans.

About the unit

Detachment 2 works out of Joint Base San Antonio. It screens and trains airmen for the Tactical Air Control Party career field. Those airmen embed with Army and Marine ground units and call in air and artillery strikes. Fast-roping from helicopters is part of their training.

University and city respond

“We are deeply saddened by the incident that occurred at the start of tonight’s football game,” UTSA said in a statement posted on X about 9:45 p.m. Saturday. The university offered crisis counseling to students and staff. On Sunday it shared a message from President Taylor Eighmy.

San Antonio Mayor Gina Ortiz Jones said she was saddened by the airman’s death and would keep his family in her prayers, The Daily Wire reported. The American Conference said it was working with both schools, stadium managers and local officials.
