A fire that started in the training area of Canadian Forces Base Wainwright in Alberta on Saturday afternoon killed and injured an unknown number of people, Canada’s military said. The New York Post and The Daily Caller reported at least seven dead and dozens hurt, citing Canadian military sources.

The Canadian Armed Forces said the fire began at about 4 p.m. local time, 5 p.m. Central, and spread quickly beyond the training area’s boundaries. The military said it will not release casualty numbers until families are notified.

What officials have confirmed

  • Deaths and injuries: “It is with profound sadness that the Canadian Armed Forces confirms the incident resulted in fatalities and injuries,” the Department of National Defence said in a Sunday news release.
  • Defence minister: “I’m saddened to share that there have been both fatalities and injuries as a result of an incident on the base,” Defence Minister David McGuinty told reporters Saturday, Fox News reported. He said he could not recall an incident like it in recent memory.
  • Fire beyond the base: The municipality of Wainwright said the fire spread past the base perimeter into the surrounding area, but no evacuation orders were issued, according to Fox News.
  • Investigation: McGuinty said the military and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police are investigating, The Daily Caller reported.

What caused it is not confirmed

Military sources quoted by Canadian media said a live-fire training exercise struck a natural gas line or well, setting off an explosion and fire, the Post and The Daily Caller reported. Canadian military officials have not publicly confirmed that account.

The Daily Caller reported wind gusts near 60 mph as the flames crossed the base fence.

Hospitals and rescue crews

  • Edmonton hospitals: Hospitals in Edmonton, about 130 miles west of the base, switched to mass-casualty procedures as patients were moved from Wainwright, both outlets reported.
  • Troops by parachute: More than a dozen Canadian military personnel parachuted into Wainwright Saturday night to help at the local health centre, the Post reported.
  • Air ambulances: STARS air ambulance crews flew in from Edmonton and Saskatoon, The Daily Caller reported.

Leaders respond

Prime Minister Mark Carney wrote on X that “a serious incident creating a major fire” had happened at the base. “Our thoughts are with all the brave women and men affected,” he wrote. Alberta Premier Danielle Smith called it a “significant and tragic fire.”

“This is a profoundly difficult moment for the entire Canadian Armed Forces,” Gen. Jennie Carignan, Canada’s chief of the defence staff, said in the department’s release.

About the base

CFB Wainwright is one of Canada’s busiest Army training bases. It covers about 235 square miles of eastern Alberta and is home to the Canadian Manoeuvre Training Centre and the 3rd Canadian Division Training Centre. The nearby town of Wainwright has about 6,600 people.
