The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission is asking deer hunters to contribute to wildlife management through its free Deer Hunting Observation Survey, available in the AGFC smartphone app.
Hunters open the app, select the Wildlife Surveys tab and answer a short set of questions after each outing. The survey records sightings of deer, bear, quail, turkey, furbearers, feral hogs and nongame species.
AGFC Nongame Mammal Program Coordinator Blake Sasse said reporting trips when hunters see nothing matters, too. That helps the agency compare time spent in the woods with sightings and combine the observations with harvest and other population data.
The survey began in 2004 as a bowhunter logbook and is now an online tool that takes only a few minutes after a hunt. The information helps AGFC track population trends and set seasons and trapping rules for sustainable harvest across Arkansas, including Southeast Arkansas.
