A long-awaited soccer and track-and-field complex for the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff cleared a key state hurdle when the Arkansas Legislative Council’s Review Subcommittee approved the university’s $5,723,000 funding plan on Tuesday, Aug. 18, in Little Rock.
UAPB Athletic Director Chris Robinson said full Legislative Council authorization is the final step before construction can begin. Review documents show UAPB covering about 62% from private funding and 38% from federal grants, with an estimated completion date of Nov. 30, 2027.
The price tag has more than doubled from a $2.5 million 2021 estimate and rose another $223,000 since January. The UA System board authorized contracting with Tarkett Sports Construction of Burleson, Texas, after pricing talks with Nabholz Construction did not reach agreement. The project is planned just north of the Johnny B. Johnson Housing Complex.
