Kimberly Guilfoyle is leaving her post as U.S. ambassador to Greece after President Donald Trump asked her to resign, the White House said Tuesday.
Press Secretary Katie Zacharia announced the request during her first briefing. “She has been a wonderful asset to the team, and we wish her well,” Zacharia said. Fox News, the Washington Examiner, the New York Post and the Daily Wire reported the resignation.
What Trump said
A reporter asked Trump about the allegations before he left the White House for Alaska on Tuesday. The reporter noted Guilfoyle was once engaged to his eldest son, Donald Trump Jr.
“She wasn’t a member of my family. She, I guess, dated my son a long time ago,” Trump said, according to Fox News. “She was doing a good job, but we didn’t like what we were reading.”
Guilfoyle’s response
Guilfoyle confirmed the move in a post on X. She called the job “the honor of a lifetime” and thanked Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
“These allegations are false, and I intend to vigorously defend my name, my reputation, and my integrity,” she wrote. She did not say when she will formally leave. Zacharia did not name a replacement.
The allegations
- Credit card bill: Fox News, citing The Wall Street Journal, reported that Guilfoyle asked Trump donor Eric Deters to pay a $100,000 American Express bill shortly before her July 2025 Senate confirmation hearing. Deters said he never made the payment.
- Business ties: The same reporting said that she promoted the interests of Greek construction and energy firm Aktor Group.
- Embassy staff: The State Department’s inspector general reportedly opened a review, Fox News said, of her treatment of embassy employees, travel and gifts. The office declined to confirm or deny an investigation.
- Her lawyer: Attorney Jesse Binnall disputed the authenticity of the messages with Deters. He said she was owed money for speaking at events before her nomination.
Trump nominated Guilfoyle in December 2024. She is a former California prosecutor and was a longtime fundraiser and surrogate for Trump.
