Federal agents searched the Washington, D.C., home of Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., early Monday as part of a criminal investigation into her immigration paperwork, the Justice Department confirmed.
“Today in the Washington, D.C., area, Homeland Security Investigations executed a judicially authorized search warrant secured by the Department of Justice. This enforcement action is part of an ongoing federal investigation,” a DOJ spokesperson told Fox News Digital, which first reported the search.
Agents wearing HSI jackets were seen outside the home before dawn, according to Fox News and the New York Post. No criminal charges or court filings have been brought against Omar, the Post reported.
What investigators are looking at
Sources close to the case told Fox News the probe centers on immigration documents filled out by Omar’s late father when she was a child. Omar came to the United States from Somalia as a refugee in 1995 and became a citizen in 2000, The Daily Wire reported.
- Mid-September: White House border czar Tom Homan said Omar was the subject of an ongoing criminal investigation.
- Homan’s comment: “If someone committed [an] immigration violation and someone committed marriage fraud or anything like that, regardless if they’re a congresswoman or not, no one’s above the law,” he said, as quoted by The Daily Wire.
- Marriage question: Critics have long alleged that Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, a British citizen Omar married in 2009 and divorced in 2017, is her brother. Omar has denied it and called the claim baseless.
- Attorney General Todd Blanche: “I’m not talking about ongoing criminal investigations,” he told The Daily Wire when asked whether Omar could be deported.
Omar’s response
Omar has said she was not told of any criminal investigation by the Department of Homeland Security, according to Fox News. Her lawyers and spokespeople maintain her naturalization and financial disclosures follow federal law, the New York Post reported. DHS had not added details about the search as of Monday morning.
President Donald Trump has repeatedly accused Omar of marrying her brother and has suggested she should be deported to Somalia. Those claims have not been proven in court.
