A Calhoun County wildfire that has burned for more than a week is nearly contained, an Arkansas Forestry Division official told the El Dorado News-Times.
Forestry Division spokesman Robert Murphy said crews that had been on the fire all day, every day are being moved off, and the division will shift to a monitoring phase for the next few days, checking the fire at least once a day, before calling it 100% contained.
Statewide, the Arkansas Department of Agriculture counts 1,489 wildfires so far this year with 37,974 acres burned. The state has activated the South Central Interstate Forest Fire Protection Compact, and task-force teams from Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina and South Carolina have arrived to help. Sixty-seven of Arkansas’ 75 counties — including Union, Ouachita and Columbia — are under burn bans, and the entire state is at high wildfire risk. Report wildfires to Forestry Dispatch at 800-468-8834.
