A gunman killed three children and a teacher Thursday at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, before an armed member of the public shot him dead, police said. A 7-year-old girl and a second teacher were wounded.

Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz said the children who died were 5, 8 and 11 years old. A 7-year-old and a 54-year-old teacher were taken to St. Charles Bend with critical injuries Thursday, according to Fox News and the New York Post.

Friday update: victims named, new details

Bend police on Friday identified the teacher who was killed as Megan Lambert, 25, of Bend. Police also released the name of the 5-year-old boy who died, at his family’s request. The families of the other two boys, ages 8 and 11, asked that their names not be released.

  • The wounded: The 7-year-old girl is in serious but stable condition at OHSU in Portland. The wounded teacher, Becky Drury, 54, of Bend, has serious but non-life-threatening injuries, police said.
  • The bystander: Police described him as a 36-year-old man whose children attend Silver Rail. He saw the gunman fire at a pickup outside, drove into the school lot, took a .40-caliber pistol that was legally secured in his vehicle and followed the gunman inside. A law enforcement source identified him to Fox News as Kaylub Giamanco.
  • A teacher fought back: Krantz said a teacher threw her cellphone at the gunman, tackled him and fought for his gun. The bystander found the two struggling and shot the gunman several times. That teacher was not hurt.
  • The gunman: Police said the 16-year-old once attended Silver Rail but is not enrolled in the district now. He carried a pump-action 12-gauge shotgun and had about 44 rounds left when he was killed. All victims were shot in the first classroom inside the doors he shot open.

Lambert’s family said Silver Rail was her first teaching job and “her dream job.” The family also thanked the bystander: “We are grateful and we think he is a hero.”

Who stopped the shooter

Krantz said a community member saw the gunman go into the school, followed him inside and confronted him. Officers who arrived moments later found the suspect dead. Federal law enforcement sources told Fox News the shooter was a 16-year-old Bend resident armed with a shotgun. The same sources said the man who shot him held a concealed carry permit. Krantz said he did not yet have details on the bystander’s gun or permit.

Gov. Tina Kotek thanked school staff, parents and first responders. She also praised the community member who stepped in, saying he acted “to stop further loss of life.”

How the attack unfolded

  • 12:59 p.m. PT (2:59 p.m. CT): The first 911 call came from a driver who said someone with a long gun had fired at the vehicle several times, Krantz said.
  • 1 p.m. to 1:02 p.m. PT: Dispatchers called all available officers, the school was told to lock down, and the first officers reached the campus.
  • Entry: Early findings show the gunman fired at locked doors to force his way in, the chief said.
  • Search: Bend police, the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office, Redmond police, Oregon State Police and federal partners cleared the building room by room. The FBI’s Portland office said it is helping with the investigation.

What investigators do not know yet

Police said Friday they are still working out how the teen got the shotgun and ammunition and what route he took to the school. They asked anyone with home or dashcam video from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, between Third Street and Brosterhous Road or near the school, to submit it. The FBI tip line is 1-800-CALL-FBI. Investigators plan to hold the scene until at least Tuesday.

Schools closed Friday

Silver Rail serves kindergarten through fifth grade in the Bend-La Pine district and had about 459 students last school year. Buses took students and staff to Journey Church to meet their families. Superintendent Steven Cook canceled classes, activities and games at every Bend-La Pine school for Friday and said crisis counselors would be at the Central Library. Mayor Melanie Kebler announced a community vigil for Thursday night. Police plan another briefing Friday afternoon.
