UAPB Hosts Food and Nutrition Entrepreneurship Camp for Pine Bluff, Marvell Students

A two-day Food and Nutrition Entrepreneurship Camp at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff gave high school students from Pine Bluff and Marvell hands-on exposure to agriculture, food systems and entrepreneurship.

The camp was hosted by UAPB’s School of Agriculture, Fisheries and Human Sciences in partnership with the National Black Growers Council, with support from UAPB’s Office of Institutional Advancement. Associate professor of nutrition and food science Kimberly Haynie, Ph.D., said immersive sessions mixed agricultural economics, nutrition, artificial intelligence and business development.

Day one included remarks from interim Provost Bruce McGowan, a health talk by Pine Bluff physician Dr. Paul W. Hannam, a tour of Arkansas River Rice Mill led by co-owner Philip “PJ” Haynie III, an AI-equipped John Deere combine demo, 4-H career programming with Teki Hunt, an 1890 Scholars briefing by Extension specialist Tomeka White, and a fish-pathology lab tour with Grace Ramena.

Day two shifted to hospitality entrepreneurship at Magnolia Food Hall, with a hands-on healthy-meal cook led by assistant professor Dr. W. Jinnings Burruss Jr. Closing remarks came from former interim Chancellor Andrea Stewart, NBGC board member Lawrence Conyers and former SAFHS dean Hazel Reed.
