NATO’s top military commander said Monday the alliance is “ready to fight tonight” if it is attacked, The Washington Times reported from his remarks at the Warsaw Security Forum.
U.S. Air Force Gen. Alexus Grynkewich, Supreme Allied Commander Europe, said NATO does not want war and that he does not see a conflict as imminent or inevitable. He said preparing to fight and keeping channels open to resolve misunderstandings is the best way to keep the peace.
What Grynkewich said
- Ready now: If attacked, NATO is ready to fight tonight, he told the forum in Warsaw.
- Block, blunt, break: Grynkewich said allied land, sea and air forces would block an initial attack, blunt any advance, and if needed break the enemy’s forces and the war-fighting system behind them.
- Tools: He said the response would use sensors, autonomous systems and military force to stop an assault and deny an enemy the ability to hold NATO ground.
- Ukraine: He said the answer to Russian sabotage and malign activity should include stronger support for Ukraine, and clear red lines from allies.
The Washington Times also reported Grynkewich’s view that the alliance would win a war with Russia if forced to fight. He said NATO does not seek war with anyone and is unlikely to be caught by surprise by a military attack.
