Household Hazardous Waste vs Transfer Station Rules

Guide Civics & Government · evergreen reference, not a news story · All guides

County junk days and transfer stations often refuse wet paint, pesticides, oils, and some batteries — or accept them only on household hazardous waste event days. Dumping them in ditches is illegal and a water problem. Call the solid waste district or county office before you load the truck.

Evergreen how-to diagram — verify current local office hours and forms.

Before you drive

  • List the materials (latex vs oil paint, batteries, oil)
  • Ask which site/day accepts them
  • Transport upright and sealed
Habit: keep a tote labeled HHW so it does not accidentally ride with regular trash.
Pine desk tip: some retailers take used oil or rechargeables year-round — ask, then still follow county rules for the rest.
