SpaceX CEO Elon Musk said Monday he will give one of his own SpaceX shares to every child in America next year.

“Next year, I will give one of my SpaceX shares to every kid in America. This will be the first of many,” Musk wrote on X at 2:52 a.m. Central time. The Daily Caller reported on the pledge Monday.

Trump links it to Trump Accounts

President Donald Trump thanked Musk on Truth Social about 3:40 p.m. Central time Monday. He called Musk a “legendary friend” and praised “his incredible generosity in giving SpaceX Stock to millions of American children through TRUMP ACCOUNTS.”

Musk’s post did not mention Trump Accounts. As of Monday afternoon, he had not said how the shares would reach children, which children would qualify or when the gift would be made. SpaceX and the Treasury Department did not answer the Daily Caller’s requests for comment.

Brad Gerstner, founder of the group Invest America, which pitched the accounts to Congress, called it “the largest philanthropic gift in history” in a post on X.

How stock gifts to Trump Accounts work

Trump Accounts are tax-advantaged investment accounts for children under 18 who have a Social Security number. Federal rules already allow large donors to give stock to them:

  • Stock gifts allowed: The Treasury Department announced July 2 that it would accept large gifts of publicly traded stock and place them in children’s accounts according to the donor’s instructions.
  • Equal shares: Under temporary IRS rules in effect since Sept. 30, a donor’s gift must go in equal amounts to every child in the group the donor picks.
  • Holding period: Donated stock generally cannot be sold for five years, or until the child turns 18 if that comes sooner.
  • Federal deposit: Separately, federal law puts a one-time $1,000 deposit in the accounts of eligible U.S.-citizen children born from 2025 through 2028.

Earlier SpaceX gift

Musk’s pledge follows a July promise by SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell to give a SpaceX share to each of about 2 million Trump Accounts, the Daily Caller reported. A day before his own pledge, Musk said on X that rival artificial intelligence company Anthropic should give its shares “directly to the public,” the Daily Caller reported.

Families in Arkansas and elsewhere will have to wait for details from Musk or Treasury before they know whether their children will get a share.
