MONTICELLO — Watson Chapel High School students can now earn University of Arkansas at Monticello (UAM) college credit for JROTC coursework, under a partnership among UAM, Watson Chapel Public Schools and the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff (UAPB), UAM announced Sept. 5, 2025.
How the JROTC Concurrent Credit Works
- Credit: each Military Science I course gives three hours of UAM college credit and one unit of high school credit
- Review: UAPB, which runs an active ROTC program, reviews and approves syllabi and faculty credentials
- Campus visits: Watson Chapel students visit UAM at least four times a year, with sessions from UAM’s nursing program
- Certifications: UAM plans for participating students to earn CPR and first aid certification by year’s end
- Cost: UAM will use the Arkansas Division of Higher Education’s Access to Acceleration Scholarship, which covers $65 per credit hour for up to 15 hours a semester
Background on the UAM Military Program
UAM launched a section of its freshman military leadership course in fall 2024. That semester, Watson Chapel JROTC cadets served as color guard at UAM’s Military Appreciation football game.
UAM Chancellor Peggy Doss said in the release:
“UAM is proud to be a university that supports the military.”
